YOUTH REACH DROGHEDA

Location: Youthreach Drogheda, Co. Louth

Theme of Project: A journey through Drogheda, Learning and development, Youthreach

Drogheda Youthreach is a second chance education and training programme for young people aged between 16 and 20 years old. We approached the staff in the centre to see if they would like to engage with a mural project with us. They were keen to get their students involved.

We visited the centre to facilitate workshop with the students to generate themes and ideas for the mural. The wall space we were going to be working with, was situated in the parking lot, a very visible area to those attending Youthreach and neighbouring offices. It was important that the design was unique to the students of Youthreach but that it could also be understood and enjoyed by others who use the space.

The students came up with the theme of learning and development, Drogheda itself and Youthreach. Over the course of two workshops, ideas, drawings and designs were hashed out. We left feeling confident of what the finished artwork would and should look like and represent.

A couple of weeks later, we returned, spray paints at the ready. Over the course of a day, different groups of students came out to help spray the wall according to the final digital image that was created. Within one day, the space had completed transformed and more importantly, the students all got a chance to spray and make their mark.
